Aiming to be a physician-scientist with world-class clinical experience

While studying clinical medicine for seven years in China, I saw many patients suffering from incurable illnesses. I decided to major in pathology, the field that bridges basic and clinical medicine, to deepen my knowledge of cancer. After looking into the integrated basic and clinical medicine and medical care programs at some universities, I decided to enter Keio University because the program at Keio’s Graduate School of Medicine was the most interesting to me and offered everything I was looking for. I got good results from the research project I carried out over the past two years and these were well-received when I presented the outcomes at the Annual Meeting of the Japanese Cancer Association. I am continuing my research with the goal of becoming a physician-scientist in Japan. I learned that what is important is to first figure out what you want to do in the future and what you need to study to get there. The Keio University Hospital is in central Tokyo, and in fact is very close to the main venue for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and Paralympics. Just like the athletes who will come from all over the world to chase their dreams, my fellow students and I are also singularly focused on our goals.

My career is supported by my “connections”

For me, Keio University was a place that allowed me to focus on the road I wanted to take. It was a place that offered a lot of freedom while fully supporting me whenever I set off to learn something. After graduating, I went back to South Korea and got a job at a Japanese construction company. After three years there, I began to want to work more globally, so I started to look for jobs in Japan and Singapore. The really great thing about being a Keio Alumni while I was job hunting was the Mita-kai alumni network that exists all over the world. The chairperson of the Singapore Mita-kai introduced me to local companies. Singapore is a global country, but I felt stronger about the potential in the Japanese market, and finally decided to move to a global company in Japan. Tokyo is a city that fuses retro with digital, and is the coolest city in the world. I am very proud to work in this city. In the future, I want to work in Shanghai where our Asia base is located, and then in Sweden where our head office is based. Every day I am working hard to achieve these goals and I’m sure my Keio network will be a great asset going forward. I will always cherish my ties to Keio University.

The Eternal Power of Wakaki-chi

Wakaki-chi is Keio’s fight song. Not only is it sung at sporting events like the Keio-Waseda Baseball Games, but it is also a favorite at reunions and other events, its lyrics a constant reminder to encourage and support each other. People are always impressed with Keio graduates for their lofty goals and lively demeanor, and it must be thanks in part to the power of Wakaki-chi that lives in all of us.

Growth through tea ceremony

I chose to study at Keio University because of the all-English programs and because I could get a scholarship. In addition, I was particularly interested in studying at Shonan Fujisawa Campus (SFC) where I heard from a senior student that the professors there, some who are well-known, are truly passionate teachers. I was able to apply to the program from overseas and I think it's great how you can submit a self-introductory video instead of an interview. This helped me properly convey my thoughts and enthusiasm for wanting to study at SFC. I am making progress with my research in my major field, architecture, and I am learning a lot in the tea ceremony club. In the beginning, I couldn’t speak any Japanese, but with the help of my friends, by the time of the university festival, I was able to serve tea to the guests. Now, I am looking forward to getting a tea ceremony qualification, which can be gotten after practicing it for four years. At Keio, you have to be proactive and find opportunities for yourself. However, by doing this, you will meet so many different people and I think these are the most valuable life experiences.

Inspiration to Become Excellent at Everything You Do

I first came to Keio in 2013 after earning bachelor degrees in Economics and Law at Toulouse School of Economics. I wanted to do research, and I expected a year in Japan would broaden my horizons. Success!
I received from Keio a new vision on human institutions, with courses in behavioral psychology, political sciences, and business strategy. This inspired me to strengthen my mathematics for economics as well as learning new ways of problem-solving, so I went to Paris for a Master’s in Quantitative Economics and Finance at École Polytechnique, while studying in the Keio-Sciences Po Double-Degree Program. And here I am, at Keio again, determined to use my ever-improving Japanese to bring innovation at the interface of cultures.

Immerse yourself deeper - inside and outside the classroom

Through deep immersion inside and outside the classroom, I have grown both academically and personally in my time at Keio. I studied at the Faculty of Economics as part of the Double BA Programme between Keio University and Sciences Po.
I particularly benefitted from my microeconomics research seminar in Japanese. Moreover, I was warmly welcomed as a member of the volleyball team (despite not being a particularly good player!) and the Keio Debate Squad. My experience at Keio was an excellent balance of studying Japan from an academic perspective and experiencing daily Japanese life first hand.

In my sophomore year, I was able to take many Japanese literature and education courses in addition to the courses needed to graduate for my major.
